I love being organized. My friends always joke about how organized I always am. If I went through my entire organization strategy, you may think “wow, this is a lot” and you would honestly be right. Having said that, my organizational strategies have helped me to reduce burnout, prevent decision fatigue, and free up time for other activities. If you want to learn how I define my organizational strategy to stay organized and reduce stress, keep reading.
Define what you want your outcome to be
If you define what you want your specific outcome to be, you’ll be able to iron out the steps that you need in order to achieve that goal. If I wanted to organize my spice cabinet, for instance, I wouldn’t just say, “I want my spice cabinet to be organized.” Instead, I would say, “When I open the cupboard, I want to know where all the spices are.”
That added layer of specification will help you start to figure out the clearer steps that will ensure that you will create an organizational strategy that sticks.
Place things in a way that is easily retrievable and memorable
The key to staying organized is to have a structure that can’t be easily unorganizable but also a way that you’ll know exactly where to put it. For example, if I’m organizing my spices in a cupboard, I may put the sweet spices on the top shelf and the spicy spices on the bottom shelf. It makes things easy to remember when it’s time to put things back and also makes things easier to find.

Invest in tools that will make things easier for you
Don’t be afraid to spend a little extra time to make things easier for you. If you’re trying to organize your client projects for example. Considering using a tool like Airtable or Telegram to streamline communications. If you’re trying to organize your pantry, consider investing in containers to label everything in a way that is clear and legible. At first, all of this might seem like a lot of work, but in the end, the burden will be off your shoulders.
Stick With It
You’ve put in the time and energy to create an organizational strategy that will simplify your life and clear some headspace. Now you have to make sure you stick with it! While it may be easier sometimes to not have everything organized, it’s not worth the stress of doing it all over again. Create a plan and make sure you follow through. Or at least allow yourself to bounce back.
My stress and anxiety have significantly reduced as a result of being organized. I take comfort in knowing where things are and knowing how I can find what I’m looking for. I feel more productive and feel that I can do more every day.
